Anyone who is searching for an outdoor oasis will want to check out Big Bear Lake, California. It is located about 100 miles north of LA. This popular vacation destination is in the San Bernandino National Forest. The area is 7000 feet above sea level. There are breathtaking views, clean air and lots of nature to take in. This area should be on your list of things to do and see. Taking a trip to the lake is sure to be one in a million.
The community has an appealing history. About three thousand years ago, it was first established by the Serrano Indians. In 1845, the area was called “Bear Valley” because a man named Benjamin Wilson declared that the area was “alive with bears.” Later in 1860, gold was discovered in the area and that began the Southern California largest gold rush.
Hollywood has come to the lake many times. The area is frequented by movie makers. In 1914, the “Call of the North” was shot at the lake. Other movies such as “Paint Your Wagon”, “Kissin Cousins”, “The Parent Trap”, “Yukon Gold” and “Dr Doolittle” have all been filmed there. Nicknamed “Hollywood’s Back Lot”, Big Bear Lake is a wonderland for the visitor who loves the outdoors.
Climate is considered moderate by many. Highs are in the sixties and lows in the thirties. The area receives about 60 inches of snowfall per year. Do not be surprised though as the area only reports an average snow depth of one inch. Ski resorts do not have a problem making snow and skiing in this area is considered great.
Finding things to do in the area is not difficult. A visitor can choose from horseback riding, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, biking, bowling, skiing and lots more. A person will never be bored. The problem will stem from not knowing what to select. Be bold and try something new. The skiing is top rated. It is a wonderful place to ski.
When in the area, accommodations are easy to find. A visitor has many choices such as bed and breakfasts, condos, hostels, hotels, private homes and cabins to rent as well as camping and resort lodges and cabins. Prices vary. There are vacation packages available to visitors. Whatever the size of your group, this location will be able to accommodate.
If the visitor is a shopper, there are many places to stroll through. From shops and boutiques to the rugged trading companies, visitors will be able to find souvenirs, food and clothing in the area. No need for the big city lights as the lake will provide whatever you require.
Big Bear Lake is a wonderful vacation spot for the person who loves being outside. There are beautiful views, lodging and many things to do for a family. The climate is great for being outside.
